January 21, 2025 (KHARTOUM BAHRI) – Sudanese army forces made significant gains in Khartoum Bahri on Tuesday, tightening their grip on the city and moving closer to breaking the siege on the army command in the capital, military sources said.
Troops stationed at the Signal Corps base in southern Khartoum Bahri launched a major offensive north and northwest, aiming to link up with other army units advancing from the Halfaya, Kadru, and Darushab areas, sources told Sudan Tribune.
This marks the first major movement by the Signal Corps since fighting erupted in Khartoum in September 2024.
The army advance has forced the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to withdraw eastwards towards the Kafouri suburb, the sources added.
“The Signal Corps forces managed to reach the General Intelligence Service buildings in the west and have taken control of four buildings,” one source said. “This allows them to advance further west to Al Mazad Street and north to the railway station overlooking Al Ingaz Street.”
The distance between the advancing army troops from Halfaya and the Signal Corps base is now less than two kilometers, the sources said.
Soldiers circulated videos showing them in control of Juwayriyah School and the African Council Schools in Al Safiya district south of Shambat, as well as Abboud Park in southern Khartoum Bahri.
The RSF is now mainly concentrated in the eastern neighborhoods of Al Diyoum, Al Mazad, and Al Safiya, and the western neighborhoods of Al Danqala, Hillet Hamad, Hillet Khojali, and Shambat Al Hijra, where they are using the independent Paratroopers Corps base as a medical facility.
The army launched a ground operation in September 2024 to break the siege on its command in central Khartoum. It is now trying to connect its forces in Halfaya and Al Samrab north of Khartoum Bahri with the Signal Corps in the south and from there to the general command headquarters.
